How to turn your adopted pets story into a legacy.

The Paw‑Print on Your Heart:

The moment you locked eyes with your newly adopted companion, something clicked. Maybe it happened at a noisy shelter, a rural rescue, or in the back of a transport van that rumbled all the way to Alberta. Whatever the circumstances, that first heartbeat‑long connection lit a spark inside you: this animal belongs in my family. In an instant, a tangle of unknowns melted into pure certainty, and a chapter that used to be titled “stray” suddenly began its rewrite as “beloved.”

Yet even as you stocked up on toys and booked that first vet visit, another thought pushed to the front of your mind: How do I honour the journey that brought this pet home? The answer is simpler—and more meaningful—than you might think: document it, celebrate it, and share it. Your pet’s story can become a beacon for other animals still waiting for their own happily‑ever‑after.

A Character With a Challenge

Every great story starts with a hero, and in this tale the hero isn’t just you—it’s also your four‑legged (or feathered, or scaled) sidekick. Characters crave purpose, and rescued pets share a universal longing: to belong. They arrive carrying heavy baggage: matted fur, anxious tics, sparse vet records, or an invisible weight of abandonment. As their new guardian you shoulder that backstory, but you also inherit a question that keeps you up at night: “Will I do right by this life I just promised to protect?”

You’re not alone.

Gorgeous Marigold, a foster looking for her forever home.

Enter the Guide (That’s Us!)

When the hero is overwhelmed, a seasoned guide steps in—someone with empathy and authority. At Toes and Beans Photography, rescue stories aren’t a sideline; they are our heartbeat. We’ve volunteered in shelters, photographed animals waiting for a home, meet amazing volunteers and foster parents and learned that the bridge between surviving and thriving is paved with patience, play, and a camera shutter timed to joy. Because photographs do more than decorate walls; they validate journeys.

Our authority comes from many sessions with rescue pets, plus ongoing education in both animal‑handling and lifestyle photography. Our empathy springs from lived experience— all of our animals have been shelter pets and we are better for them.

We get it, and we’ve built a system that makes visual storytelling stress‑free for you and positive for your pet.

The Simple Plan—Three Steps From “We Should” to “We Did”

1. Consult Call (15 minutes, zero pressure). We chat about your pet’s backstory, quirks, and comfort zone. You get transparent pricing and a timeline you can pin on the fridge—no bait‑and‑switch session fees.

2. Story Session (on‑location such as a dog park or in your backyard depending on your pet). Using low‑stimulus cues and positive reinforcement, we capture then and now: the tuck of a tail that’s loosening, the tilt of ears that finally point toward play, the nose‑boop claiming you as home.

3. Photo Reveal. We meet virtually to show off the adorable photos of your even more adorable pet.  You choose the photos you want, paying a low price for what photos matter to you.  You will receive digital photos optimized both for social media and for printing.

Follow the plan, and you’ll move from intention to immortalized in as little as four weeks.

Ready to give your sidekick the cinematic treatment they deserve? Book your Consult Call today. Email us at toesandbeansphotography@gmail.com, send us a DM through Instagram @toesandbeansphotography and on Facebook (Toes and Beans Photography), or phone the studio if you prefer a real voice at 780-203-6875. Spots fill quickly—rescue‑reunion season peaks in autumn—so claim your date before someone else’s tail wags into your slot.

What’s at Risk if You Wait

Time is a trickster. Puppies clamber into adulthood, and that cautious blink your cat once offered you turns into a confident, slow blink of belonging—subtle milestones that happen once. If you skip documenting them, they dissolve like pawprints in fresh snow. Worse, without tangible proof of progress, it’s easy to forget how far you’ve both traveled on the road from rescue to family. Photos act as mile markers; without them, the journey flattens into a blur.

Imagine ten years from now explaining to your kids that their stately, sofa‑hogging shepherd was once skeletal and skittish—but having no images to prove it. Their eyes will glaze over, and a vital piece of empathy may remain unplanted. Don’t let silence steal the power of your pet’s redemption arc.

Now flip the script. Visualize looking at your photos on adoption anniversaries. Each photos pairs heart‑thumping action shots with quieter frames: your dog’s first relaxed belly‑up nap; the cat who once cowered under furniture now owning the windowsill like royalty; the bunny who graduated from cardboard‑box hideouts to full‑throttle binkies across the living room. These images aren’t vanity—they are evidence that love rewrites destinies.

Marigold is

This Matters Beyond Your Household

Adoption isn’t just a transaction between shelter and owner; it’s a ripple in the wider ecosystem of rescue. When you share a professionally crafted photo essay that radiates joy, you become an advocate by default. Friends scrolling social media don’t see “charity case”; they see possibility. That exposure chips away at myths that rescue pets are “damaged goods” or “risky.”

One viral adoption glow‑up can empty a shelter wing. We’ve witnessed it: a senior dog’s transformation slideshow raised enough donations to cover all adoption fees for the month. Your pet’s story could do the same. By choosing high‑quality storytelling over quick snapshots, you multiply credibility and reach—crucial currencies in the attention economy.

Overcoming Objections—“My Pet Is Too Shy” & Other Myths

Objection 1: “My dog panics around strangers.”

Our sessions use a telephoto lens and incremental distance, allowing us to capture candid joy without invading personal bubbles.

Objection 2: “My cat won’t leave the couch.”

Great! Couch forts, sunlit cushions, and gentle chin scratches make for storytelling gold. Authentic beats posed every time.

Objection 3: “I can get the same photos on my phone.”

Phones have amazing cameras and you will get a lot of great snapshots of your pet. Engaging with us at Toes and Beans Photography allows you to be a part of the photographs, get high quality photos that are professionally edited and let you off the hook for the stress of the session!

Mini Guide—DIY Moments to Capture Before Your Session

Can’t book immediately? Start archiving milestones with your phone:

Arrival Day Portrait: wide eyes or wagging tails as they cross your threshold.

First Favourite Spot: the chair, blanket, or sunbeam they claim.

Breakthrough Moment: the instant they initiate play or fall asleep belly‑up.

Inspiring a Rescue‑First Culture

By commissioning a professional celebration of your adopted pet, you model a rescue‑first mindset for your network. You’ll notice acquaintances sliding into your DMs to ask, “Where did you adopt?” or “Who took those photos?” That curiosity snowballs into action, and action into emptied kennels. In short, your album could become the quiet hero of someone else’s adoption journey.

If your heart is pounding a little faster right now, that’s your cue. Contact us today for your free consultation!

Every Tail Deserves a Tale

The shelters are still full. Somewhere a ginger cat presses her paws against kennel bars, waiting for the same miracle that found your pet. When you celebrate the journey from rescue to family, you don’t just honour your own animal—you cast a beam of hope into every concrete run and steel cage. And hope, like any good story, begs to be shared.

Meet Rennie-our first baby model!

Introducing our first baby model at Toes and Beans Photography! In this behind the scenes look, discover how a cozy lifestyle session featuring 4 month old Rennie, her loving parents, and their dog became a celebration of warmth, connection, and natural beauty. Peek into our signature approach to baby photography and see how pets are always welcome in the frame.

You’re Not Just Looking for Photos—You Want to Remember the Feeling

There’s something special about the first few months of a baby’s life—time folds into itself, and the days feel both long and fleeting. If you’re anything like the families we meet, you’re not just looking for a posed photo with perfect lighting (though we’ll take care of that too). You’re craving the real moments—the stretch of tiny fingers, the belly laughs, the way your dog gently watches over their new sibling.

That’s where we come in.

Rennie having fun tummy time.

A Family Just Like Yours: Meet Rennie and Her Crew

When we launched Toes and Beans Photography, our dream was to capture the natural, playful spirit of real families. So when Rennie’s mom reached out to book a session for their four month old daughter, their dog, and the two of them, we couldn’t wait to get started.

From the moment we arrived, we were welcomed into a home filled with warmth and calm. Rennie had just woken from a nap and was full of coos and wiggles. Her parents were kind, relaxed, and clearly head over heels in love with their little girl. And then there was the dog—furry, protective, and wonderfully patient. In short: the perfect session.

Too Many Families Miss Out on Photos They’ll Treasure

Let’s be honest—these early days are busy. Between diapers, feedings, and figuring out nap schedules, it can feel impossible to book a photo session. And when you do, you might worry it’ll feel stiff or stressful.

We get it. And we’re here to change that.

Rennie and her parents, who are so in love with her!

At Toes and Beans, we specialize in relaxed, real life sessions that work with your baby’s rhythm. No pressure. No expectation for “perfect behaviour.” Just a gentle approach that lets everyone breathe—and allows us to capture something genuine in return.

Toes and Beans Photography Walks Beside You

We know stepping in front of the camera can feel vulnerable—especially when there’s a baby (and sometimes a dog!) involved. That’s why we come prepared with patience, a sense of humour, and a deep respect for your family’s vibe. Some people feel comfortable posing, some really dislike it.  We work with what makes you feel comfortable and happy.  Some days we have more “posed” family portraits and some days we have more “candid” family photos.  All are great!

Rennie’s dog wanted to be the centre of attention!

Our sessions follow your baby’s lead. If they’re fussy, we pause. If your dog needs a break, we adjust. And if magic starts happening we quietly capture it, without interrupting the moment.

What It’s Like to Book a Session Like This

Booking your session is easy (and you don’t have to be our “first” baby model—Rennie just earned that title by being amazing).

Here’s what you can expect:

1. You reach out through our website or social media.

2. We chat—by phone or virtually—to learn a bit about your baby, your hopes, and your vibe.

3. We choose a location—either your home or an outdoor spot that works well for little ones.

4. We meet for the session, which usually lasts 60–90 minutes depending on how your baby is doing.

5. You receive a gallery of professionally edited images, filled with heart and softness.

We’ll walk you through it every step of the way. There’s no pressure, no complicated choices, and no upselling. What you see is what you get—and we promise, what you’ll see is beautiful.

Because Time Really Does Fly

Toes (and Beans, get it?!)

The truth is, babies don’t keep. That gummy grin? Those squishy wrists? They fade so quickly.  Too many families look back and wish they had just one good photo that feels like those early months.

We don’t want you to miss that.

With Rennie’s session, we were reminded again of how precious and fleeting these moments are. Capturing her joy, the softness in her parents’ eyes, and the quiet pride in their dog—it was an honour. We want every family to feel that same sense of peace and pride when they look back at their photos.

Real Photos for Real Families

By the end of our session with Rennie, everyone was smiling—including the dog. We played, we paused, and we let the day unfold naturally. That’s our recipe for success.

And the results? A gallery full of emotion, connection, and beauty. Not because anyone posed perfectly—but because they were simply themselves.

If you’ve been wondering whether it’s “the right time” for baby photos, consider this your gentle nudge. Your baby is already changing. Let’s freeze a little bit of now—so you can carry it into forever.

💌 A Personal Note

To Rennie and her family—thank you for being our very first baby model. You made our hearts so full, and we are grateful for your trust. Your love shines through every single frame.

📅 Ready to Book?

If you’d like to schedule your own lifestyle session—whether your baby is 4 weeks or 4 months—we’d love to meet you. Dogs and stuffies welcome.

Behind the Lens: A Day in the Life of a Lifestyle Photographer

📸 Why Golden Light, Sticky Fingers, and Tiny Toes Make the Best Stories

You Want to Remember This Moment—But Life Moves Fast

You’ve blinked, and your baby’s outgrown the onesie. Your rescue pup no longer fits in your lap. You meant to book a photo session months ago, but life got full: diapers, work emails, vet visits, teething, belly laughs, and missed naps.

You want more than a picture.
You want this—right now—captured in a way that tells your story.

But what actually happens when you book a lifestyle photographer?

Maybe you're picturing forced smiles, rigid poses, or a stranger showing up with a lens the size of a loaf of bread, barking directions at your toddler.

Let me take you inside what it really looks like behind the scenes of a lifestyle photography session. Because when you know what to expect, you can relax and enjoy the process.

The Problem: People Expect Perfection, But Real Life is Beautifully Messy

Many families hesitate to book a session because they think:

  • "Our home isn’t Pinterest-worthy."

  • "My toddler won’t sit still."

  • "I don’t know what to wear."

  • "I hate being in front of the camera."

And I get it.
Those are valid concerns.

But what if I told you that lifestyle photography isn’t about perfection—it's about presence?

It's about capturing how your daughter tucks her fingers in yours.
The way your senior dog still looks at you like you hung the moon.
The clutter on the coffee table from another afternoon well-spent.

That’s not mess—that’s memory.

Meet Your Guide: A Photographer Who’s Been in Your Shoes

Hi, I'm Tracy from Toes and Beans Photography, and here's the thing:

I don't expect your life to be perfect.
I expect it to be real.

I specialize in photographing babies, families, and rescue pets in a lifestyle setting—which means no stiff studio lights, no awkward “say cheese,” and absolutely no pressure for anyone to behave like someone they’re not.

I’ve wrangled cats, crawled on the floor with toddlers, and caught once-in-a-lifetime smiles through peanut butter smudges.

I’m here not just to take photos—but to guide you through an experience that’s relaxed, joyful, and deeply personal.

The Plan: What A Real Day Looks Like (Spoiler: It Starts with Coffee)

Let me walk you through what a typical day looks like for me as a lifestyle photographer—and what you can expect when you book a session with Toes and Beans.

7:30 AM — Planning with Purpose

The day starts with a cozy cup of coffee and a review of the day’s session notes. I revisit our consultation—your child’s name, your pet’s quirks, the things you told me you don’t want to forget. I double-check weather, lighting, and gear, making sure everything is fully charged and packed.

9:00 AM — Scout & Travel

If your session is outdoors, I arrive early to scout the best light. If it’s at your home, I walk through with fresh eyes, noticing the soft window light in your kitchen or how the morning sun spills across your living room floor.

This isn’t about staging.
It’s about finding the magic where you already live.

10:00 AM — The Session Begins

You’re a little nervous, but your baby’s curious, and your dog is suspicious of my camera. That’s okay. I sit on the floor. I let your child show me their favourite stuffy. I let your pup sniff my camera bag. We ease into things.

You’re not on a clock—you’re in a moment.

We play, we move, we laugh.
We follow the light and the giggles.
And when your toddler has a meltdown halfway through?
We pivot. I switch to candid shots of you soothing them or your pet curling at your feet.

Those in-between moments often become your favourites.

Noon — The Session Ends with Hugs and Happy Exhaustion

You’re surprised at how easy it felt.
No one was forced to smile.
Your child didn’t even realize we were “doing pictures.”

And your dog? Well, they’re already napping.

The Transformation: From "We're Not Photogenic" to “I’m So Glad We Did This”

After the session, I carefully select the best images—those honest, joy-filled frames that tell your story.

You’ll receive:

  • A curated collection of both print-ready and web-optimized files.

  • Gentle guidance on printing, displaying, or gifting your photos.

  • A heartfelt thank-you for letting me into your world.

Clients often tell me:
“I didn’t think we had anything worth capturing. Now I can’t stop looking at these photos.”

That’s what lifestyle photography does.
It shows you the beauty in what you already have.

Avoiding Failure: Don’t Let This Season Slip By

It’s easy to let time pass and say,
“We’ll do photos when the baby sleeps better.”
Or “Once we’ve painted the living room.”
Or “After the next haircut.”

But life doesn’t wait.
Babies grow. Pets age. Memories blur.

The only way to hold onto today is to document it today.

Call to Action: Let’s Tell Your Story

If you’ve been waiting for the right time, this is it.

📅 Book your lifestyle session today and let’s plan something meaningful, relaxed, and utterly you.

At Toes and Beans Photography, we specialize in:

  • Baby milestones (from brand new to one year)

  • Lifestyle family portraits

  • Pet photography for beloved rescue animals

  • Sessions tailored to your space and pace

✨ Let’s take the pressure off and put the magic back in memory-making.

Bonus: What Clients Are Saying

“Tracy made us feel so comfortable. It felt like we were just hanging out at home, and somehow she turned that into the most beautiful pictures I’ve ever seen.”
— Jenna M., mama of two

“I thought our senior cat wouldn’t cooperate, but Tracy captured her so perfectly. These are photos I’ll treasure forever.”
— Carla N., rescue pet parent

“It wasn’t stressful at all. In fact, we laughed the whole time. She saw beauty in the chaos.”
— Liam and Rayna, new parents

You’re the Hero of This Story

A day in the life of a lifestyle photographer isn’t about gear or angles.
It’s about you.

Your rhythm. Your joy. Your real, everyday life.

And when you invite me in, I bring my camera—but more importantly, I bring my heart.
Because I know these aren’t just photos.

They’re your legacy.

So let’s capture it—one messy, meaningful moment at a time.

Top 5 Tips for a Paw-sitively Great Pet Photo Session

Planning a pet photo session? It might sound like a wild idea—especially if your furry friend has a mind of their own—but with a little prep, it can be a fun and memorable experience for both of you. At Toes and Beans Photography, we specialize in capturing your pet’s true personality—zoomies, tongue-out grins, and all! Whether you're working with a high-energy pup, a shy kitty, or a curious bunny, we’ve got you covered. In this post, we’re sharing our top five tips to help you (and your pet) get ready for a paw-sitively amazing photo session. From burning off a little extra energy to choosing the perfect treats and preparing yourself for the spotlight, these tips will set you up for success. Because the best photos come from moments of real connection—and those are the ones you’ll treasure forever. Let’s get your pet camera-ready!

Getting ready for a professional pet photo session can feel a bit like trying to herd cats (literally!). At Toes and Beans Photography, we know that our furry friends don’t always follow scripts, but with a little preparation, your session can be smooth, fun, and full of frame-worthy moments. Whether you’ve got a bounding puppy, a curious kitten, or a wise old rabbit, these five simple tips will help you (and your pet) get the most out of your experience.

Let’s break it down Superhero style: You’re the hero, your pet is your sidekick, and we’re the guide to help you create unforgettable memories (basically we are Alfred!).

1. Know Your Sidekick
Every pet has their own personality, and understanding their quirks is the first step to success. Is your dog more of a zoomie-loving goofball or a mellow cuddle bug? Does your cat enjoy lounging in the sun or exploring new spaces? Think about how your pet reacts to new people, sounds, and places.

Guide Tip: If your pet is nervous or shy, let us know! We’ll build in time to let them warm up to us. For high-energy pets, we’ll plan a few action shots and take breaks as needed. Our goal is to work with your pet’s natural rhythm, not against it.

Why it matters: A pet that feels safe and understood will show more of their true personality—and that’s what we want to capture.

2. Burn Off the Wiggles (but Not Too Much)
It’s tempting to tire your pet out before a session, and yes—some exercise is a great idea! But keep it moderate. You want your pet to be relaxed, not exhausted.

Guide Tip: Take your dog for a walk 30-60 minutes before the session. Let cats play with a wand toy or chase a treat ball. This burns off extra energy while keeping them alert and engaged.

Why it matters: Pets that are too hyper may struggle to focus. Pets that are too tired may just want a nap. The sweet spot is a pet who’s settled but still curious.

3. Bring the Goodies
Treats. Toys. Favourite blankies. Bring them all! Rewards and comfort items can make a world of difference.

Guide Tip: Bring small, non-crumbly treats your pet loves (think tiny training treats or soft snacks that are easy to chew). If your pet has dietary restrictions, let us know in advance—we can work with that.  If we are shooting at your house, make sure these items are easily at hand.

Also, pack a favourite squeaky toy, a leash or harness that looks nice in photos, and poop bags (yes, please!).

Why it matters: Familiar scents and rewards reduce anxiety and create motivation. That treat for a sit-stay pose? Totally worth it when the photo turns out amazing.

4. Humans, You Need Prep Too
Your energy matters! Pets take their cues from their people. If you’re calm and cheerful, they’ll feel more at ease too. Think about what you’ll wear (if you're joining the photo), and choose comfortable, neutral or pastel tones that won’t distract from your pet.

Guide Tip: Avoid busy patterns or bold logos. Soft, natural fabrics photograph beautifully—especially when cuddling with a furry friend. And don’t worry, we’ll guide you through simple posing so you always feel confident.

Why it matters: You’re part of your pet’s story. Including you in the photos makes the session more meaningful and creates keepsakes that highlight your special bond.

5. Trust the Process (and Have Fun!)
(Paint the picture: What success looks like)

Let go of perfection. Seriously. Some of the best photos happen when things go a little off-script—a curious head tilt, a goofy tongue-out grin, or an unexpected snuggle. Trust your photographer (hey, that’s us!) to follow your pet’s lead and make magic in the moment.

Guide Tip: Sessions are built with flexibility in mind. We allow extra time for sniff breaks, water sips, and even zoomies. The more relaxed you are, the more your pet will shine.

Why it matters: The goal isn’t a "perfect pose." It’s an authentic portrait of your pet’s unique spirit.

You + Your Pet = A Story Worth Telling

At Toes and Beans Photography, we believe pets are family. Whether your best friend has paws, claws, or whiskers, our job is to tell your story with warmth, patience, and a little bit of whimsy.

You don’t have to have a perfectly trained dog or a camera-loving cat. You just need love, a bit of prep, and a photographer who sees the beauty in the bond you share. (That’s us, by the way!)

"What Am I Really Paying For?" – The Truth About Photography Pricing (And Why It Matters)

💸 Confused by photography pricing? You’re not alone!

Some photographers show one price… but the real total comes later. At Toes and Beans Photography, we believe you deserve the full story up front — no surprises, no pressure, no hidden costs.

👉 Wondering what you’re really paying for?

We broke it down in our latest blog post:

“What Am I Really Paying For?” – The Truth About Photography Pricing (And Why It Matters)

✨ Transparent pricing.

🐾 Honest service.

📸 Happy families.

A parent (pet or baby!) searching for family photography

You’re excited. You’re ready to capture those fleeting moments — your baby’s gummy smile, the way your toddler holds the family dog’s leash, your family all together in a season of life that feels chaotic but beautiful.

You head to Google, Instagram, and maybe even ask a local moms or pet group for a photographer recommendation. You find a few you love. But then you hit a wall:

What does it actually cost?

Some websites show just a session fee. Others mention “collections” or “packages,” but no prices. A few list the session fee, then later mention that images are an additional purchase. And now you’re asking:

"Wait… how much will this actually be in the end?"

Confusion and frustration about pricing

We hear this all the time. And you're not alone.

When photography pricing feels murky or unclear, you might start to wonder:

Am I being upsold?

Will I end up spending more than I budgeted?

Will I be pressured into buying images I can’t afford to walk away from?

This confusion leads to hesitation — and that hesitation can cause you to miss capturing moments that are happening right now.

And it shouldn’t be that way.

Toes and Beans Photography

Hi! We’re Toes and Beans Photography, a lifestyle photography studio in the Edmonton area specializing in capturing joyful, relaxed moments with babies, families, and their beloved pets.

We believe in happy hearts, muddy paws, and full transparency. That means when you book with us, you know the total price from the beginning — no surprise fees, no complicated math, and no pressure.

We’ve been in your shoes, wondering what the bottom line will be. And now that we’re behind the camera, we’ve built a pricing model that reflects how we’d want to be treated: with honesty, clarity, and kindness.

How we help you avoid confusion and make informed decisions

Here’s how our transparent pricing works:

✅ One Total Price, All-Inclusive

When you view our pricing, what you see is what you pay. That includes:

  • The session fee

  • A specific number of professionally edited, high-resolution images

  • Private online gallery for downloading and sharing

  • Print rights for personal use

We don’t believe in charging you twice — once to show up, and again to access the memories we’ve created together.

✅ Clear Package Options

Want more than what’s in the collection? We offer add-ons such as additional digital photos but they’re clearly priced and completely optional. You’ll never be locked into something unexpected.

✅ Full Price List Available from the Start

No need to email us just to get basic pricing. We respect your time and budget. That’s why our full pricing guide is available on our website and in our client welcome package.

Choose a photographer who makes it easy to say “yes”

Your family moments deserve to be captured. And you deserve to know, from the first inquiry, what that will cost — without needing to guess, dig, or brace for a surprise invoice.

🎯 Ready to book a session with no pricing mystery?

Check out our price schedule here: https://toesandbeansphotography.ca/packages

What happens when you book with Toes and Beans

Imagine this:

You reach out and instantly receive a warm, welcoming message that includes our full pricing. You choose your package and feel confident knowing exactly what’s included.

The session itself? It’s easy and playful. Your baby giggles, your dog snuggles in, and your family laughs so hard your cheeks hurt. A few days later, you receive a gallery full of images you adore — no decisions to make, no extras to buy unless you want to.

You walk away feeling seen, cared for, and respected. That’s how photography should feel.

The cost of unclear pricing

On the flip side, let’s talk about what happens when pricing isn’t clear:

You book a session thinking it’ll be one price… and later find out you have to pay another $300+ just to download your images. You feel frustrated — and a little taken advantage of.

You’re not alone in that experience. Many people come to us after having gone through something similar.

But we’re here to offer a better way — a way that respects your budget, your time, and your trust.

📌 Quick FAQ on Photography Pricing

Q: Why do some photographers charge only a session fee at first?

A: It’s a common business model: clients pay a lower upfront fee, then purchase images afterward. It works for some, but it can lead to sticker shock.

Q: Isn’t it cheaper to pay only for the session and then choose images later?

A: It might appear cheaper upfront, but often costs more overall — especially if you fall in love with more images than your package includes. (Which, let’s be honest, you probably will.)

Q: Why does Toes and Beans offer all-inclusive pricing?

A: Because we believe in simplicity and honesty. We want you to know exactly what you’re getting, with no hidden costs.

If you told me ten years ago that I’d be running around with a camera instead of a stethoscope, I would have laughed (nervously, probably while checking your vital signs). Back then, I was a registered nurse with a big passion for helping kids. Today, I’m a professional photographer with an even bigger heart for capturing joy, innocence, and connection — especially in babies and rescue animals. How did I get from one to the other?

It’s quite the journey. But like any good story, it starts with a calling, a turning point, and a desire to make a difference.

Let me take you there.

The World Moves Fast — We Miss What Matters Most

We live in a world full of noise and hurry. Between errands, careers, and raising kids (or rescuing cats, in my case), it’s easy to lose track of the little things. The toothless grin of a baby discovering her toes. The way a scruffy mutt looks at the person who just gave him a second chance. These moments are small, but they matter. And too often, they’re gone before we even notice.

I didn’t realize how much they mattered until I started really seeing them.

A Nurse with a Passport, a Heart for Service, and a Camera

I started my professional life in medicine — working as a registered nurse in Edmonton and volunteering with a paediatric cardiac surgery team overseas. We traveled to countries across the globe, helping children in desperate need of life-saving surgery. It was incredible and humbling work, and it changed me forever.

But something unexpected happened on those trips.

I fell in love with the world through my lens.

Between long shifts in the Paediatric and Neonatal Intensive Care Units, I began taking photos of the people, the places, and eventually began to travel to see the world — the wild animals that called those places home. Lions in Tanzania. Gorillas in Rwanda. Tigers in India. Cheetahs in Namibia. I was completely captivated by the quiet dignity, the raw beauty, and the powerful stories unfolding right in front of me — without words.

For the first time, I understood the power of photography not just to document, but to honour life.

From Wildlife to Home Life — Why I Chose This Path

My nursing career has taken me through many types of nursing and provided amazing opportunities. I was craving a meaningful life.

That’s when I discovered SCARS — Second Chance Animal Rescue Society. I started volunteering as a photographer, helping showcase adoptable animals so they could find their forever homes. I quickly saw how the right photo could melt a heart or open a door. One expressive glance from a hopeful pup? One perfectly timed yawn from a sleepy kitten? Adoption applications poured in.

I had stumbled into something that combined everything I loved: heart-led service, animal welfare, and capturing fleeting, emotional moments that actually meant something.

Naturally, I wanted to learn more. So I started taking classes, attending workshops, and — eventually — joining a mentorship program focused on newborn photography. Because as it turns out, I also really, really love babies.

And not just “I’ll hold them at baby showers” love.

More like “I’ll build a photography business that celebrates their earliest days in the gentlest, most joy-filled way possible” kind of love. I am building skills to be able to volunteer with Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep to provide meaningful portraits to grieving parents.

Creating Images That Make People Feel

Now, I specialize in lifestyle baby photography and pet portraiture — and honestly? I can’t imagine doing anything else.

Every photo session is a story waiting to be told. A nervous rescue dog seeing compassion for the first time. A brand-new parent staring at their newborn like they’ve just discovered magic. A goofy toddler feeding their baby sibling Cheerios during the shoot.

I’ve traded hospital scrubs for cozy knit wraps and fluffy blankets, IV poles for plush toys and pacifiers — and yet, I’m still doing what I set out to do: help people celebrate life in all its precious, fleeting beauty.

What This Means for You

If you’re reading this, maybe you’re a new parent. Or an animal lover. Or someone who understands how quickly life moves, and wants to hold onto the parts that matter most.

You’re not looking for stiff poses or studio-perfect smiles. You want real moments, real connection, and real joy. And you want a photographer who gets it.

I became a photographer because I saw how easy it is to overlook the everyday magic around us — and how powerful it is when someone helps you see it, and keep it.

When you work with me, you’re not just hiring someone to take pictures. You’re inviting someone into your story — someone who’s been halfway around the world, only to realize that the most meaningful moments are often the quietest ones. The ones closest to home. The ones we feel before we ever frame them.

Let’s Capture What Matters — Together

If you’re ready to slow down for a moment and hold onto the little things — the paw prints, the baby toes, the belly laughs, the tired smiles — I’d be honoured to help you do that.

Photography is more than a career for me. It’s a calling. One that started in faraway countries, in hospital wards and wildlife reserves, and led me right here: to your family, your rescue pet, your story.

Let’s tell it beautifully.

A Few Fun Facts About Me (Because Let’s Be Honest — You Probably Want to Know Who You’re Hiring):

I live in a cozy corner of rural Alberta with my husband and a very opinionated cat named Pandora.

I’m still a nurse at heart, which means I’m calm under pressure and very good with newborns (and nervous dads).

I believe that goldfish crackers are a perfectly acceptable form of bribery during toddler shoots.

I will absolutely cry if your dog gets adopted or your baby smiles in their sleep. Zero shame.

“Why Hire a Photographer When I Have an iPhone?”

You’re holding your baby in one arm, and your dog is zooming laps around the coffee table. You reach for your phone, hoping to catch the moment—the gummy baby grin, the wagging tail, the chaos and cuteness all rolled into one. You aim. You tap. And… oops. Your baby’s drooling, your dog’s sniffing the lens, and the best shot of the day is now a blurry photo of your feet.

You mutter to yourself: “Why is this so hard? I have a good phone!”

You’re not wrong. iPhones are amazing. They’re in our pockets, always ready, and their cameras are wildly impressive. So it’s a fair question:

Why should I hire a professional photographer when I have an iPhone?

Let’s get into it—because the answer might surprise you.

Spoiler: It’s not about the camera. It’s about the moments—and who's in them.

1. Your Whole Family Deserves to Be in the Photo (Yes, You Too!)

That includes the person behind the phone (hi, that’s you!), the baby, and the four-legged fluffball that thinks they’re the baby too.

Whether it’s a sleepy newborn session, a first-birthday cake smash, or a romp in the field with your rescue pup, you belong in the memory. Not awkwardly reaching in with a treat or hidden behind a stroller—in the frame, glowing with love and joy.

As your photographer, I make sure everyone gets to shine—baby toes, puppy paws, and proud, loving humans included.

2. An iPhone Sees What’s in Front of It. I See What Matters Most.

A phone camera doesn’t know that your senior rescue dog just learned how to play again. Or that your baby is about to let go of your finger and take their first step. Or that the way your kitten climbs into your arms at nap time makes you tear up a little.

But I do.

Before I ever lift a camera, I get to know you. What you love. What makes your family unique. What you *never* want to forget. I photograph with your heart in mind—not just your feed.

3. Hiring a Photographer Means More Snuggles, Less Stress

Wrangling a baby and a dog at the same time while trying to take a photo? That’s a level of multitasking no one warns you about.

When you hire me, you get to hand off the stress. I’ll help you prep your outfits, plan the time of day for the best light and moods (for both babies and pets!), and make sure we get the shots without the chaos.

Your only job? Show up, love your crew, and enjoy the ride. I’ll do the rest—even if we need to pause for snacks, zoomies, or diaper changes. With lifestyle photography, I come to you, which makes the whole process even easier!

4. Lighting, Timing, and the Trick of the Treat

It’s not just about pressing a button. It’s about knowing how to catch the exact millisecond when your baby squeals with delight or your pup cocks their head in that  “Did someone say walk?” way.

Professional photographers have tricks up our sleeves—how to use light, work with movement, and gently guide babies and animals to look their best, while keeping the vibe relaxed and real.

Your iPhone’s portrait mode can’t match that level of intuition, timing, and patience. (And I always bring extra treats.)

5. Because 4,732 Photos on Your Phone ≠ Memories You Can Hold

How many photos are on your phone right now? Go ahead, I’ll wait.

Chances are, it’s in the thousands. And finding that one sweet photo? Like a needle in a haystack—especially when you’re sleep-deprived or chasing a muddy dog around the yard.

When you hire me, you get more than a gallery. You get a collection of hand-edited, emotionally rich images designed to be framed, shared, and cherished—not lost in the scroll.

These are the kind of memories you’ll hold onto when your baby’s grown and your dog is snoozing a little more than zooming.

6. Your Photos Should Be More Than “Cute”—They Should Make You Feel

Phones can take a cute picture. That’s true.

But a professional photo? One where your baby is curled into your arms, your pup is resting their chin on your knee, and you’re fully present, fully loved?

That’s a photo that stops you in your tracks. That makes you feel the love, the silliness, the soul. That’s the difference between “aww” and actual goosebumps.

Those are the kinds of moments I live to capture.

7. Because This Moment—Messy, Magical, and Real—Matters

You don’t need to wait until you lose the baby weight or train the dog to sit still. (Spoiler: they’ll never sit still long enough. That’s kind of the point.)

This season of life—with the baby giggles, the fur on your black leggings, the way your dog gently watches over the crib—this is the good stuff. This is the magic you’ll miss later.

You’re not just hiring me to take a picture. You’re investing in a version of your story that you can revisit again and again.

And that’s something no iPhone can offer.

The Truth: Your Life Isn’t a Pinterest Board—It’s Better

You don’t need perfection. You need connection. The kind that shows up in baby yawns, puppy kisses, muddy paws, and sleepy snuggles.

Your iPhone is great for everyday snapshots. But when it comes to the moments that matter most, the ones that change too fast, the ones you want to feel years from now?

You deserve more.

You deserve to be seen, remembered, and celebrated—just as you are.

* I work with both babies and pets—and I love a little chaos.

* A professional photo is more than a snapshot. It’s a story.

Because they aren’t just pets-they are family…

It all begins with an idea.

The Pet Parent With a Problem…

If you're like most devoted pet parents, your camera roll is overflowing with blurry pictures of your dog mid-zoomie or your cat giving you that perfect side-eye. You try to catch them in the right light, at the right angle, doing the adorable thing they always do, but no matter how many times you try, you’re left with photos that don’t quite capture who they really are.

Maybe your dog looks nervous around strangers. Maybe your rescue cat hides from new people. Maybe the idea of getting them to “pose” sounds like a total joke.

Still, you want something more than quick snapshots. You want real memories. The kind that tug at your heart long after the fur settles.

Why This Matters More Than You Think

Our pets impact on us is lifelong. They are our comfort, our chaos, our comic relief. They teach us about love, loyalty, and the power of living in the moment. So when it comes time to capture their essence, you don’t want stiff poses or studio backdrops.

You want images that feel like them—rolling in the grass, chasing a leaf, dozing in their favourite sunbeam.

Unfortunately, many pet parents don’t know where to turn. Traditional photographers often treat pets as props instead of personalities. And for animals who are shy, reactive, or recently adopted, that kind of experience can be stressful.

You need a photographer who gets it.

Meet the Photographer Who Understands

Hi, I’m Tracy, and I’m the heart behind Toes and Beans Photography. I specialize in photographing rescue pets and beloved companions in a way that’s playful, patient, and deeply respectful of who they are.

Whether you’re honouring a senior dog, celebrating a quirky kitten, or documenting the early days with your newly adopted best friend, I create a space where your pet can be themselves, in their favourite space.

I’ve studied animal behaviour, taken courses in low-stress pet handling, and continuously invest in education so that both you and your furry friend feel safe, seen, and celebrated.

What It’s Like to Work With Me

Here’s how we make pet photo magic together:

1. Let’s Talk – You send a request for a consult and we chat about your pet’s quirks, comforts, and needs.

2. Custom Session Planning – I tailor our session to your pet’s energy level and personality. Nervous dog? We’ll meet in a quiet spot they know well. Feisty kitten? Let’s bring out their favourite toys.

3. Session Day – This is where the fun begins. There’s no pressure for perfect poses. We follow your pet’s lead and capture real, joyful moments.

4. Gallery Reveal – During a virtual or in-person session, you receive a curated collection of images that capture your pet’s unique soul.

Every session is relaxed, animal-first, and infused with love.

What You’ll Have in the End

Imagine flipping through an album one day. You see their goofy grin, their gentle eyes, their energy and essence frozen in time.

These aren’t just photos. They’re pieces of your heart, wrapped in fur (or hair, or scales, or feathers!).

They’ll remind you of the way your dog looked at you when you came home, how your cat curled up on your chest, the bond you built together.

With lifestyle pet photography, you walk away with more than images—you get emotional evidence of a love that changed your life.

Why Now Is the Time

It’s easy to think, “I’ll do it someday.”

But time passes quickly. The truth is, tomorrow isn’t promised—and that’s why today matters. There is no “perfect” time, so lets capture those cuddles today!

You don’t have to wait until they’re trained, thinner, calmer, or more photogenic.

They are perfect right now, just as they are. Let’s honour that.

Ready to Capture the Soul of Your Pet?

Whether you just brought home a new furry friend or you’re soaking in every moment with a senior companion, now is the time to preserve those memories.
